SHINE is a social and academic resource for families of homeschooled students in grades 6-10.
Middle School students are amazing. They can think critically, be legitimately funny and make a real difference in their communities. They should be engaging with their work, their ideas and each other. SHINE serves families who want to home-school their children, but who feel like they would benefit from some academic guidance and a learning community.
My goals are:
-To protect the vibrancy and playfulness of childhood, by helping parents meet the needs of their children outside of a traditional school. School work and a student’s life should be full of opportunities to be outside and have fun.
-To offer important and relevant ideas to young people. I would love for the lessons I offer to become a regular topic of conversation around the dinner table. The world is full of amazing things, but it takes some time to organize lessons and make them accessible for learners. After 13 years of bringing ideas to students, I know what will get them thinking.
-To help students develop the academic skills necessary to study anything that they want to. Life is simply easier if you can effectively communicate in grammatically correct English. Furthermore, students are often more receptive to academic guidance when it is coming from a teacher than they are when it is coming from their own parents. For 8 years, my students have written an essay every week. Most of them do it happily and all of them are grateful for the experience.
-To support families as they work with their children. I can let you know what skills your children are strong in and what skills they need to develop.
-To develop within myself and my students an awareness of the concepts necessary to be responsible citizens of the world. This doesn’t mean that we will dwell in unsolvable global problems, but we will have an awareness of social and environmental justice.
For a reasonable price, your student can take online courses, receive mentorship from an experienced and kind teacher, and have rich reading and writing experiences. If you live near Schoharie County in NYS, there will be a day program once a week. If you live near Northampton, we will meet in person each month. There will also be two major overnight excursions, one to camp and one to Boston.
You are welcome to participate as much or as little as it makes sense for your individual family and child. That said, the experiences are organized to complement each other and when taken together, offer a rich and diverse learning experience.
There are several free sample classes coming up, if you are interested in seeing if the program would be a good match for your learner.
I would love to talk to you more. Please contact me at theresa@s-h-i-n-e.org or at 413-475-0540.
